Taj Mahal |
 |
A dream etched in pristine milky-white marble, the Taj Mahal symbolizes the beauty of eternal
love, as no other monument can ever hope to do. Not just romantics, but also the greatest of philosophers and thinkers have
eulogized the
magnificence and romance of the Taj by describing it as "the temple of love", "epitome of
love", and even "a teardrop on the cheek of time". To people the world
over, this mausoleum of Mughal Empress
Mumtaz Mahal, is synonymous with India. Arjumand Banu (alias Mumtaj Mahal) was
the royal consort of Emperor Shah Jahan… and it was in her sweet memory
that the grief-stricken emperor built the Taj Mahal - an extravagant building of
timeless beauty, and the outcome of a unique combination of passion and
architectural exuberance!
As
a tribute to a beautiful woman, the Taj
reveals its subtleties when one visits it in leisure. The
rectangular base is symbolic of the different sides from which
a beautiful woman can be viewed. The main gate
frames the Taj like a veil to a bride's face, which
should be lifted delicately, gently and without haste to reveal her beauty. Its
stunning architectural beauty is beyond description, particularly at
dawn and sunset. These changes, they say, depict the different moods of a woman.
The colors of the Taj change at
different hours of the day and during different seasons. Pinkish in the
morning, milky- white in the afternoon, and golden in the evening, the Taj is,
arguably, at it's glorious best on a full moon night. Like a jewel, the Taj
sparkles in the moonlight when the semi-precious stones inlaid into the white marble
on the main mausoleum catch the glow of the moon.
Its curving, gently swelling dome and the square base upon which its rests so
lightly is a familiar image from hundreds of brochures and travel books. One of the
seven wonders of the world, the Taj Mahl is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular buildings of the world. As a tomb, it
is unmatched, for mortal remains have never been housed in greater
grandeur!
