The Pink City of India: Jaipur - Hotels, Tours, Cars, Guides, Maps
Rajastan's only hill station, Mount Abu is surrounded by forests, rich in flora and fauna. The drive uphill along Abu Road overlooks an arid region strewn by huge rocks with smooth surfaces and weird shapes, fashioned by high velocity winds. It has a fascinating history that goes back into the deepest antiquity. It is considered as a holy spot by both Hindus and Jains. Once the tranquil hilltop retreat of meditating rishis, or holy men, it is supposed to have been home to no less than 330 million different gods and goddesses. To the Rajputs, however this was Mount Olympus, the scene of the great Agni Kunda (sacred fire pit) of ancient times.
In the early 19th century, the British would seek refuge during the summer months from the hot, dusty plains of Rajasthan, amidst the eucalyptus trees and oleanders. Charming English countryside cottages were built around Nakki Lake. Situated 2 miles north of Mount Abu are the Dilwara Temples. These breathtakingly beautiful carved Jain temples dating back to the 11th and 13th centuries are amongst the finest temples India has to offer. They are an absolute must-see for any traveler in Rajasthan, considered by many experts to be superior to the Taj Mahal. You can also visit the highest point in Rajasthan- Guru Shikar, which is situated at an altitude of 5,676 feet!
