Shekhavati lies in a triangle between Jaipur, Bikaner and Delhi. With the exception of the rocky Aravalli range that divides Shekhavati diagonally, showing its jagged face here and there, the countryside is flat and almost monochromatic. Today, Shekhavati comprises the administrative districts of Sikar and Jhunjhunu. Since the middle of the 19th century, the inhabitants of Shekhavati have patronized the art of fresco painting compensating in a way, for the lack of color in the landscape of their homeland. The Marwaris, the merchant community which prospered on the trade routes between Delhi and the coast and between Central Asia and China, were extravagant patrons. They constructed large havelis or mansions for their families. The frescoes on the earliest havelis date back to the early 18th century. Most of the havelis have gilded and painted walls, dazzling inlays of mirror-work and glass, and painted friezes of hunts and durbar scenes. The Major towns in this region are Nawalgarh, Dundlod, Mukundgarh, Mandawa, Sikar, Baggar, Fathepur, Ramgarh, Jhunjhunu and Lachhmangarh altough at least a few havelis survive in virtually every town.
